Email regarding New Orleans

An email from CalArts grad student Arsene DeLay, sent Septemper 1:

Those of you that do know me also know that I am a native of New Orleans, and can only imagine the living hell my life has been for the last few days, as I watch the place I call home vanish and transform into a third world country. Aside from my parents, my entire family inhabits this one of a kind city, so you don’t even want to know the hell on earth I’ve experienced in the past few days. That being said, I think it is important for all of you to know what is really going on, because although the news is giving you live coverage, there is still a bias you DON’T know about..

Those images you’ve seen on the news tat remind you of a third world country at war is not Haiti (if you haven’t looked at the news, SHAME ON YOU, GET A DAMN CLUE AND GET INFORMED!!!) that is the city of New Orleans here in the so-called United States of America. The problem here is that united has become an oxymoron inthe phrase. Contrary to reports of food, water, and rescue being dropped to the city of New Orleans, you all need to know that those reports ARE ALL LIES.

What’s my source? My remaining family members still trapped at the Convention Center, unable to hide the dead bodies by the building from my cousins, all under the age of 12. The members that are looting becausethey’ve gone 3 days without food and water, and they’re children arebeginning to loose hope. The members that are stuck in St. Tamany parishthat can’t get gas to get the hell out, but are pulling together what they can to survive, and the family that’s still squatting in the French Quarters strapped with weapons but unable to leave out of the fear because of thewidespread looting.

I’m so furious right now I can’t even think straight. I’m sitting here listening to officials talking numbers of everything the government is dropping, but the reports from the text messages from myfamily still in the belly of the beast, and my aunt who is an NBC affiliate in the sister station of Florida conflict greatly. What is happening down there should not be happening in the US in this day and age. So what is the point of this message? To let you know what great things this administrationis doing for our country. *

— The national guard IS NOT present to help keep the peace in New Orleans.
— The people of New Orleans are not receiving food and water
— People are jumping off of the I-10 bridge committing suicide, because they can’t get out
— Children are dying of dehydration at the convention center, while their parents, law abiding citizens, are out searching, and looting for food and water
— Armed thugs have taken over the city as they wait for the supposed help everyone is supposedly sending.
— People are laying down on their roofs, and waiting for God’s hands totake them to a better place.
— Bodies are afloat everywhere in the city
— Rioting and looting going in Baton Rouge and Houston
— The people have been there for Four days and no help has come.
— The mayor of New Orleans is letting the masses march

These are just a few of the things I’ve just been told, and I thought you all should know.

Am I emotional? Absolutely. Am I pissed to the point of wanting to causesomeone physical harm? You bet your ass I am. But there is nothing else I can do. Not only have my parents and I lost our houses down there, but the five generations of both of our families have not only lost everything, but we are still trying desperately to get them out of harm’s way. And all I cando is stay glued to my computer, the news, and the friends and family, and get increasingly upset as I see my fellow natives suffer and have to resort to animal instinct to survive, as I sit here helpless, and unable to save, find, and help my family. I don’t know what else to say, except that we can not let this continue.

PLEASE, HELP, CONTACT YOUR CONGRESSMAN, SPREAD THE INFORMATION, GET INFORMED DO NOT ALLOW THIS TO CONTINUE, IF WE CONTINUE TO DO NOTHING, WE WILL ALL SUFFER, IF WE ALLOW AN ENTIRE NATIVE CULTURE TO DIE, WE KILL OFF WHAT LITTLE ROOTS WE HAVE AS AN ENTIRE NATION BUILT OF TRANSIENTS LEAVING THEIR HOMES TO MAKE A BETTER LIFE FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES!!!!!!

Please, pass this on,
Arsene M. DeLay
